You've invested in a premium, raw wellness product. The last thing you want is to open your jar a week later and find it separated, off-smelling, or past its best. Proper storage isn't complicated — but it does matter more with sea moss gel than with most supplements.
Here's everything you need to know.
Why Sea Moss Gel Needs Special Care
Sea moss gel is a living, minimally processed food — not a shelf-stable supplement. It contains active enzymes, natural moisture, and bioavailable minerals that make it potent. Those same properties also make it perishable.
Unlike a capsule or powder, sea moss gel is sensitive to:
- Temperature — warmth accelerates microbial activity and fermentation
- Air exposure — oxidation degrades nutrients and affects texture
- Contamination — introducing bacteria via utensils shortens shelf life significantly
The good news: with the right habits, your gel stays fresh, potent, and delicious for weeks.
Refrigerate When You're Home
Your gel was cold-shipped to stay protected during transit and while it waits for you. Once you're home, move it straight to the fridge and you're all set.
Fridge Storage (Primary Method)
- Temperature: Store between 2°C–4°C (standard fridge temperature)
- Container: Keep it in its original airtight jar, or transfer to a clean glass container with a tight-fitting lid
- Shelf life: 3–4 weeks from receipt when stored correctly
- Always use a clean, dry spoon — never double-dip or use a wet utensil, as moisture and bacteria introduced from outside will shorten shelf life
Freezer Storage (Extended Method)
If you've ordered in bulk or want to extend your supply, freezing is a great option:
- Portion first — freeze in ice cube trays or small silicone moulds for easy single-serving use
- Transfer to freezer bags once frozen solid, removing as much air as possible
- Shelf life frozen: up to 3–6 months
- To thaw: move a portion to the fridge overnight — never microwave or thaw at room temperature
- Note: Texture may change slightly after freezing (can become slightly more liquid) — this is normal and doesn't affect potency
Signs Your Gel Has Turned
Even with proper storage, it's good to know what to look for:
- Strong sour or fermented smell — a mild ocean scent is normal; a sharp sour odour is not
- Visible mould — discard immediately
- Unusual colour change — some darkening is normal over time, but significant discolouration warrants caution
- Excessive liquid separation — a small amount of separation is normal; stir and use. Excessive watery separation after a short time may indicate the cold chain was broken
When in doubt, trust your senses. Sea moss gel should smell fresh and mild, and feel smooth and gel-like.
Common Questions
Can I leave sea moss gel out overnight?
We don't recommend it. While sea moss gel is resilient, we don't take chances with a product this fresh. If you're not consuming it right away, it goes in the fridge — that's the standard we hold ourselves to, and we'd encourage the same at home.
Can I add sea moss gel to hot drinks?
Yes — but add it after brewing, not while boiling. Excessive heat will break down the gel structure and degrade heat-sensitive nutrients. Stir into warm (not hot) liquids for best results.
Why is my gel more liquid than expected?
This can happen if the gel was exposed to warmth during transit or after opening. It's still safe to consume if it smells fresh and mild — refrigerate immediately and use sooner rather than later.
Can I store sea moss gel in a plastic container?
Glass is preferred — it's non-reactive, easier to clean thoroughly, and doesn't absorb odours. If using plastic, ensure it's BPA-free and food-grade.
How do I know how long mine has been in the fridge?
Write the date on the jar with a marker when you open it. Simple habit, saves guesswork.
